California Greenlights Testing of Self-Driving Trucks on Highways

California has officially approved testing for autonomous trucks on its highways, as reported by TechCrunch. This regulatory milestone allows companies like Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI to operate self-driving trucks under stringent safety protocols.

These companies received permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) after new regulations were adopted in April, removing a previous ban on testing driverless vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds. The permits require human safety operators behind the wheel and restrict testing to roads with a speed limit over 25 miles per hour, unless on direct routes.

Self-driving technology firms such as Aurora and Kodiak have predominantly conducted their testing in Texas due to previous restrictions in their home state. According to TechCrunch, Aurora launched its first self-driving truck service in Texas in 2025, and Kodiak also expanded its operations beyond off-road environments in West Texas during the same period.

These regulatory changes have not been without controversy. Teamsters California recently filed a lawsuit against the DMV, arguing the agency bypassed procedures requiring a full study of the economic and safety impacts of autonomous trucks.

Despite the legal challenges, the authorization is seen as a crucial step towards commercial deployment of autonomous freight services on California’s extensive highway network, a significant logistics hub in the United States.

Aurora and Kodiak's California tests will inform ongoing debates about the viability of self-driving technology in commercial logistics, potentially setting precedents for other states considering similar regulations.
