SpaceX to Develop $100B 'Starbase' Spaceport in Louisiana
SpaceX has announced it will construct a $100 billion spaceport dubbed 'Starbase' in Louisiana. This development marks a significant expansion, with construction expected to commence in 2027. The selected site sits along the Gulf Coast in Vermilion Parish, benefiting from plentiful space and strategic access to resources.
TechCrunch reports that the new site aims to replicate and expand upon the existing Starbase in Texas, with the first launch scheduled for 2029. SpaceX sees this as a critical step in supporting its ambitious goal to launch thousands of Starship rockets annually, which are crucial for various projects, including the Starlink internet service.
Ars Technica highlights that the Louisiana site offers SpaceX the opportunity to operate without competition for range access. Moreover, the vast, 125,000-acre parcel allows for extensive development while enabling the preservation of local wetlands and wildlife habitats, a priority for SpaceX as they look to integrate with local ecosystems.
Louisiana Economic Development (LED) anticipates the creation of thousands of jobs, both direct and construction-related, which could significantly boost the regional economy.
